Review: 1,000 Places To See Before You Die

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the places and moments that take our breath away" - anonymous

Kali ini aku posting mengenai buku yang ditulis oleh Patricia Schultz yang berjudul "1,000 Places To See Before You Die" - A Traveler's Life List, diterbitkan pada 2003. What, How, Costs, When etc.

Hampir 1/4 daripada 1,000 tempat yang disenaraikan berada di negara Amerika Syarikat, ini tidak menghairankan kerana penulis berasal dan membesar di negara tersebut. Buku ini kali terakhir dikemaskini pada tahun 2003, maka ada beberapa perkara atau tempat menarik yang terkini tidak dimasukkan. Malaysia juga berkongsi 5 buah tempat menarik dari 1,000 yang tersenarai, iaitu Sipadan Island - Epic Diving That Rates Among the Best, Headhunter's Trail - In the Footprints of the Wild Men of Borneo, The Datai - Luxury at the Jungle's Edge, Pangkor Laut Resort - A Sultan's Island Escape dan Penang - Pearl of the Orient. Aku berpendapat sepatutnya lebih banyak lagi tempat-tempat menarik bertaraf dunia dimasukkan bagi bab Malaysia, seperti Endau-Rompin National Park, Mulu Cave, Mount Kinabalu, Pulau Tioman, Petronas Twin Tower dan Tanjung Piai - The southernmost tip of mainland Asia. Selepas membaca buku ini, terdetik pula hati ingin menulis sebuah buku sebegini, tetapi berperspektif Malaysia - "1,000 Places To See In Malaysia". Sebelum itu, mari bersama-sama melihat senarai tempat-tempat yang pernah aku lawati, alami dan pergi yang tersenarai dalam buku ini (ada beberapa kota telah aku kunjungi tetapi tidak melawat ke tempat yang disenaraikan, contoh kota Amsterdam, antara tempat yang disenaraikan ialah Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Pulitzer Hotel, Anne Frank House etc. Mengikut turutan dan susunan di dalam buku ini (places/events I've been/experienced which listed in the book);

1. London, England - "The man who tires of London tires of life. For there is in London all that life can afford." - Samuel Johnson
2. Tea At The Ritz, London, England - A Civilised Ritual Steeped in Tradition.
3. Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Oxfordshire & Cambridgeshire, England - Educational Legends.

39. The Blue Mountains and Lilianfels, New South Wales, Australia - Magnificent Scenery and Lodging to Match.
40. Sydney Opera House and The Harbor, New South Wales, Australia - A Beloved Icon and Luxe Hotel Overlooking the Waterfront.
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only one page" How relevant this statement nowadays?

There's already a tv program with the same title on Channel 11. Not sure which comes first, the program or the book. I was told Rough Guide is another good travel book before Lonely Planet came.

Nurul - perasan gak pasal program tu, the book come first and then the program. But the program tak cover semua tempat dalam buku tu... lupa lah plak setiap hari apa, cant wait to watch the program. Rough Guide, yup not bad at all.... la ni i travel without beli apa2 gide book coz boleh cari info thru internet. But this book quite different I would say... macam buat kita craving for travelling plak... :)

Assalamualaikum...

Bila tengok buku Saudara ni, rasanya nak gak saya cari 1, mana2 tempat yg x dpt nak gi tu, dpt tengok pun jadilah... maklum rasanya x mampu nak ke semua tempat tu. Bagus gak idea Saudara utk menulis sebuah buku sebegini utk negara kita. Saya doakan moga terlaksana. Moga berjaya, insya Allah, Amin...

Citer2 pasal nak buat travel book ni reminds me of a Malaysian photographer, Fufa who recently exhibited photos taken during his travel at Starhill Gallery. Really interesting to read about his travelling experience especially his recent trip to Africa. Memang budget traveller giler...tido and makan pun ala kadar aje.. ada yang sanggup tak?

Rush;

Red-Light District, Amsterdam, Netherlands pun masuk dalam list? :-)

Rush,

Seronok baca... bak kata org jauh perjalanan luas pemandangan. Sebelum ni ingatkan tengok kat tv dah cukup tengok negeri org.Tapi tetap tak sama bila 'merasa' sendiri.

Insyaallah,nak plan cuti2 Malaysia at least tahun ni, tak payah pening convert Euro :) Rezeki lebih akan pegi jauh lagi... Budget travel vs luxury travel. Insyallah...
Bak kata org-Cuba,try,test.

Salam,
Sebenarnya Sarawak pun tak abis 'round' lagi hehehe..

Pembetulan, 2x ke Holland. Peluang diberi alhamdulillah. Tapi both sekejap2 je sebab pegi meeting. 3 hari & 4 hari.. sblm puasa and sblm raya sob sob sob. Nak extend pun tak sampai ati kt family.

Yela, tak cover lagi Malaysia ni. Kurang adventurous sikit kot, takpa everyone have their own priority :D
